A mechanical watch is a watch that is a manually wound watch, they still make those today. An automatic watch has approximately 256 moving parts, it has a rotor and the more parts the thicker the watch and it stays wound up by how active you are. If you take the watch off and you do not wear it for two or three days its going to come to a complete stop and you have to manually unscrew the crown on certain watches get the watch wound back up with correct date and time.
